The North Pocono Public library is hosting its 6th Annual Wine and Cheese Fundraiser on Friday, June 1 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
The library is located at 1315 Church Street in Moscow.
This year's event is a tribute to the memory of Gasper Mendicino, an owner of Mendicino's restaurant in Covington Township and a community partner to the library, who passed away unexpectedly in 2017.
According to Susan Jeffery, librarian, “Gasper Mendicino had been a generous community patron and wonderful partner to the North Pocono Library, and the community.
“His contributions of funds, food - especially pizza - and basket donations to our events goes back at least six years, before our new library was even a vision.
“This tribute to him is our way of saying thank you to this wonderful man who inspired us all!"
This is the first time the library has chosen to honor a patron, with Gasper being a natural choice due to his generosity.
Lynn Mendicino continues to uphold the family tradition and is very supportive with her generous donations to the library.
The Wine and Cheese evening will feature musicians Tony Vergnetti and Robbie Walsh, a local duo, who sing and play guitars to the rhythm and music of pop tunes.
They have been playing at the event the last four years and also have a relationship with the Mendicino family. After each Wine and Cheese event, they have another gig at Mendicino's Restaurant and that tradition continues this year as well.
The event is organized by the library Board of Trustees with the assistance and support of the Friends of the Library.
Together, both organizations have approximately 20 active members that contribute their time and energy to the library.
The menu for the evening features local businesses with their delectable delights that includes the host, Wood Winery located in Madison Township, Cheeses from Caulkins Creamery and a chocolate dessert table full of donations from Gertrude Hawk Chocolates, the Dunmore Candy Company and locally made chocolate confections by supporters of the library.
What fundraising event would be complete without a basket raffle? The library has you covered, with about twenty baskets from a combination of individuals, the community, and from local businesses at the library.
Topping the list of prizes is a night's stay for four people at Kalahari Resorts, along with 4 tickets to the Rail Riders baseball games and a unique gift from the Scheme) Forum at the University of Scranton for free lectures by notable scholars. Plus, there are many other terrific baskets.
Every year, the Wine and Cheese Event features an art exhibit from a local artist.
This year's artwork is from Carmona Cusick, posthumously, and will be on display compliments of her husband, Daniel L. Cusick's pieces, and those archived at Marywood University.
Carmona was a renowned oriental artist who mastered in two distinct art forms in her lifetime — Chinese watercolor and Annamese pottery.
Her artwork has been on display at the White House, the Smithsonian, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and at the Pennsylvania Governor's mansion.
Notably, a tile she was commissioned to do by the College of William and Mary was presented as a gift to Great Britain's Prince Philip.
Tickets are available until May 31. Cost is $25 at the library or $30 at the door. Must be at least 21 to attend.
