Judy Palmer of Madisonville will no longer be seen delivering mail in the North Pocono area. After dedicating 25 years of service to the Moscow Post Office, she is now ready to embark on life’s next chapter - retirement.
Born and raised in the North Pocono area, Palmer began working at the Moscow Post Office, which was located on VanBrunt Street at the time, as a substitute rural mail carrier in August 1986. After enjoying working part-time in this substitute position, she became a full-time carrier in 1991.
“It turned out to be something I really enjoyed,” she said. “I loved being on the road, and I loved talking to the people on my route. I delivered mail to over 600 families, so I got to know thousands of people I didn’t know before.”
That daily interaction between the mail carrier and customer is something Palmer will miss dearly. She will also miss watching the children of these families grow into adults and begin having kids of their own.
As for her co-workers, “It was just a joy working with them all,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for better people to work with. I spent 25 years of my life with many of these people. In that time we’ve shared it all together - the good, the bad and the ugly. I will miss each and every one of them.”
Something she won’t miss, however, is waking up at 5:30 a.m. every morning. “Also,” she added, “I won’t miss working the day after a holiday or having to deliver in a heavy rain storm or an ice storm.”
Now that Palmer is retired she said, “It’s all about me now. I’m going to take care of myself and enjoy my family. I have five grandchildren and one more on the way, so I can’t wait to spend quality time with them. That’s my goal.”
After retiring on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, Palmer treated herself to a nice retirement gift - a red mustang. She and her family are also planning a trip to Jamaica to celebrate. Judy resides in Madisonville with her husband Don. They have three children.
