North Pocono’s junior high football team got off to a rough start in Week One of the 2011 LFC campaign.
Head Coach Pat Shields led his squad up against a powerful Paupack squad and suffered alopsided loss. However, the young Trojans bounced right back, hammering out a 38-6 road win last Wednesday afternoon in Honesdale.
“We haven’t had a whole lot of practice time yet, but the kids are really coming along,” said assistant coach Zach Matisko afterward. “They’re a good group of kids and they’re just going to get better as the season moves along.”
On the Field
North Pocono dominated its Week two battle against the Hornets right from the opening kick-off.
Quarterback Luke Fetter led the charge, directing a balanced Trojan offensive attack that featured both a bruising ground game and potent aerial assault.
“Luke can pretty much do it all,” said Coach Matisko. “He’s the quarterback for this team and the freshmen, so he’s getting a ton of valuable exerience.”
Fetter scrambled for a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, then passed for the 2-point conversion. Meanwhile, Matt Kelly and Mike Epifano proved to be a deadly combo for the Trojan running game.
Kelly broke loose for a pair of TD runs in the first half as North Pocono built an insurmountable lead.
Epifano also found his way into the Hornets’ end-zone and closed out his game with well over 100 yards rushing.
Coach Shields substituted liberally in the second half of this one, getting all of his players in the game.
Michael Craig made the most of his chance, scoring the Trojans’ final TD of the afternoon on a 10-yard sweep around right end.
Josh Wells and Tommy Minor also contributed key plays to the North Pocono victory. Wells lined up at end, while Minor plaed both received and QB.
