We’re already deep into football season and local meteorologists are starting to threaten us with that nasty, four-letter weather word: snow.

Nevertheless, the National Pastime is still very much alive and well...even as we wait in dread to see frost on the pumpkin for the first time.

While Albert Pujols and the Cardinals battled it out with Josh Hamilton’s Rangers for World Series supremacy, local players kept hitting homers and throwing strikes.

Just last week, North Pocono’s own Justin Haddix turned in another brlliant mound performance. A fireballing righty, Haddix pitched a no-hitter for Moosic as the Mets fought their way to a runner-up finish in a Long Island (NY) tournament.

It’s been a long baseball season for Haddix.

Justin began his 2011 campaign as the ace of North Pocono’s varsity staff. He then pitched all through the summer and eventually helped his team capture the District 17 Senior League title.

Now, at the end of the fall travel season, Haddix is looking like a “can’t miss” prospect.

Perfection
With longtime skipper Harry Nelson in the dugout, Moosic competed at the Antonia Agostinelli Memorial Tournament last weekend.

The event was held at Baseball Heaven in Long Island and attracted elite travel teams from all over the East Coast.

The Mets were forced to play six games in less than 30 hours, but rose to the occasion. Coach Nelson’s squad went unbeaten in pool play and didn’t taste defeat until finally losing to the NY Gothams in the championship game.

Haddix provided the individual highlight of the Met’s title run. Justin went to the hill against the NY Thunder and completely dominated the contest.

He piled up 13 Ks and walked just three. At one point, Justin fanned 10 in a row. He struck out the side in three consecutive innings and never allowed a Thunder baserunner to reach second base.

Haddix needed just 107 pitches in twirling a seven inning no-hitter.

The 6’1’, 170 lb senior has worked 33 innings for the Mets this fall. To date, he owns a 3.24 ERA. He’s struck out 44 batters and issued 17 walks.

Offensively, Haddix is batting a solid .263 over the course of 24 games.

As a team, the Moosic Mets are again enjoying a successful campaign. Heading into the final tournament of the year, Coach Nelson’s squad sports an overall record of 31-22-4.

Another North Pocono product, Billy Nelson, is also dazzling coaches and fans alike on the mound.

Nelson’s most recent gem came in a 2-1 win over Canes North. Billy earned the win, allowing only one hit over seven and fanning four.
