Young co-ed club growing by leaps and bounds

After an in-league cancellation at East Stroudsburg North due to the weather last Saturday, the North Pocono Youth Wrestling Club was invited to wrestle at Valley View on Sunday, January 7.

This was an “exhibition only” formatted event, and so North Pocono grapplers were paired up with other school districts that were either finished wrestling or were unable to find matches based on weight class and experience.

“We had more than 30 wrestlers come out and brave the chilling temperatures,” said Head Coach Matt Mapes.

“It’s great to get an invite from Valley View and give our wrestlers as much mat time as possible.”

Even though the club is in just its second year of existence, local wrestlers did well against more seasoned and experienced school districts with 22 pins. Many grapplers had two or more matches.

On the Road

Cold temperatures and marginal road conditions did not dissuade the North Pocono Youth Wrestling Club grapplers and parents from traveling to Honesdale’s Dual Meet, Sunday, January 14.

Exhibition only, the NP grapplers wrestled against Damascus at 10 and East Stroudsburg North at noon.

“There was tough competition against Damascus and East Stroudsburg,” said Coach Mapes. “These teams have many experienced wrestlers in their ranks but our kids did well considering most have only two years experience.”

Coach Mapes and his hard-working volunteer staff are grateful for all the support the club is receiving already this season.

“Without our sponsors, this club and home dual meet would not be possible,” said Jeanne Antidormi, Fundraising Chairperson.

“Whether a cash donation to the club or food for concession stand, we are truly grateful for their support.”

Sponsors include Medicus Urgent Care, K-N-D Auto, NEPA Tax Associates LLC, Coccia Ford Lincoln, Kipp E. Adcock Magisterial District Judge, Pure Lavi Salon, Picc’s Ice Cream, Down Home Homemade Pudding, Encore Outdoor Advertising, Nina’s Pizza and ShopRite of Daleville.
