Trojan grapplers building toward a bright future
The North Pocono Youth Wrestling Club is now in its second year of existence and returns to the mat with more than 50 grapplers.
Now a part of the Northern Elementary League, North Pocono will wrestle neighboring school districts such as Western Wayne, East Stroudsburg North, Wayne Highlands (Damascus, Honesdale) and Wallenpaupack Area.
A kindergarten thru 8th grade club that welcomes both boys and girls, wrestlers age from 5-14 years of age all are welcome to join.
Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 to 8 p.m. when school is open.
Prospective students and parents are welcome to attend any practice or dual meets to check out the program.
“More than 70 percent of our young wrestlers are returning from last year”, said Head Coach Matt Mapes, a former Duke University wrestler and ACC champion.
"This is great for the current club and for the future of wrestling in the North Pocono Community.”
Returning volunteer coaches also include Joe Antidormi, Mike Boyle, Ian Kennedy, Dave Berry and Glenn Khoury. New coaches are John Birbeck, Mike Brown and Jim Dunn.
On the Mat
North Pocono had a strong showing at the Western Wayne Dual Meet at the Western Wayne Middle School on Saturday, December 17.
Even though the event was exhibition only, NPYWC was extremely competitive against Honesdale in Round 1 and Western Wayne in Round 2.
The next Dual Meet will be at East Stroudsburg North in Bushkill on January 6 at 10 a.m.
NPYWC will compete against Damascus (Wayne Highlands) in Round 1 and East Stroudsburg North in Round 2, followed by a Dual Meet in Honesdale on January 14.
North Pocono's next home meet is scheduled for Sunday, January 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the middle school gym.
The club will be battling Western Wayne at 10 a.m. and then Damascus at noon.
Other teams competing against each other include Wallenpaupack, Honesdale and East Stroudsburg North.
As a co-ed youth athletic program in the North Pocono community, NPYWC's mission is to provide a safe, fun and challenging wrestling experience to all participants regardless of their individual skills and strengths.
