Dear Editor:

It was just one year ago that Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre (GSWB), a
campus of Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, began its new role of providing high quality ambulatory, short-stay and urgent medical services.

Over that time, the team at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre has succeeded in not simply accepting, but championing this unique healthcare model.

Today, thanks to a highly professional and committed staff and significant facility investments by Geisinger Health System, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre is meeting a community need and continuing its patient care mission.

Since the Adult Urgent Care Center opened in July 2009, the medical staff has doubled in size and treated more than 9,000 adults with non-emergent illnesses and injuries such as sprains, strains, colds and flu; quickly and without unnecessary trips to an emergency room.

Most Adult Urgent Care and Pediatric Urgent Care patients are treated and on their way home in under 90 minutes.

The Same-Day Surgery Center at GSWB is conveniently located and offers  patients easy access and parking. Surgeons from all over the area provide a growing variety of specialized surgical services including: colorectal, ear, nose & throat, gastroenterology, general, gynecological, hand, ophthalmology, oral/maxillofacial, orthopedic, pediatric, plastic/cosmetic, podiatry, and urology surgeries.

At the recently opened Pre-Surgery Center, patients receive all tests required before an upcoming surgery at one location. The pre-surgery test results are automatically forwarded to the appropriate surgeons using Geisinger's advanced electronic health records system.

Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy, are offered in a fully renovated unit with a state-of-the-art gym and "a therapy apartment."

Also new to GSWB is a podiatry service where foot care experts treat a full spectrum of foot conditions, from corns and calluses, and other minor issues to more serious heel fractures, diabetic foot conditions and congenital foot deformities.

At GSWB, you'll also find the region's first and only Pediatric Urgent Care Center, a Pain Management clinic for those with acute or chronic pain symptoms, and a Sleep Disorders Center to identify and treat sleep problems.

The Women's Health clinic staff provides gynecology and pre-natal care, and our Partners in Pediatrics practice offers general and specialized pediatric care, locally.

Volunteer work at GSWB is also flourishing. Each day, volunteers talk with patients and families, perform administrative duties and manage the Gift Shop. In April, volunteers with the Geisinger Northeast Auxiliary opened a resale shop called "25 Church Street, A Repeat Boutique," with all proceeds benefitting Auxiliary community projects.

The continued success of GSWB and our collective mission of providing high quality ambulatory, short-stay and urgent medical services is the result of community confidence and support, as well as employee morale, flexibility and creativity.

On behalf of everyone at GSWB, we thank the residents of the surrounding community, our employees and volunteers for making our healthcare model thrive.

Sincerely,
