Last week many picked out the perfect gift and arranged the perfect romantic evening, but planning can’t guarantee that Valentine’s Day, although already passed, won’t end in a broken heart.

That’s why for Valentine’s Day and beyond, Allstate encourages everyone to protect themselves, their sweetheart and their valuables.

“Romantics invest their heart and soul finding the perfect gift for their sweetheart,” says Chris Conner, Allstate spokesperson. “But if those expensive items aren’t properly protected, they could be left seeing red.”

According to Allstate claims data, the average cost for a jewelry claim last year in Pennsylvania was $1,935, up from $1,706 in 2009.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, consumers spend an estimated $17 billion on gifts on Valentine’s Day.

If you’ve selected a diamond engagement ring or other expensive jewelry for your main squeeze for Feb. 14 or any other day of the year, it’s important to think about following these safety and protection tips.

• To protect expensive jewelry, talk to your insurer about adding the Scheduled Personal Property (SPP) endorsement to your Homeowners, Condominium, Manufactured Homeowners, or Renters policy. SPP can provide actual cash value protection.

• SPP coverage provides additional protection against loss or damage to special treasures. It is protection not typically provided with standard property coverage.

• SPP benefits typically include, no deductibles to meet, coverage for lost or damaged items, and coverage for an array of valuable personal property such as jewelry, furs, silverware and antiques.

• You should also check with your insurer about an available option to increase jewelry coverage over and above what is provided by one of the above policies when an endorsement for valuable jewelry items is selected.

An endorsement is an extension to the basic jewelry protection provided by many insurers’ property protection policies.

“A significant benefit to having SPP coverage is that it offers all-risk protection, which
means customers are insured for all different types of perils, including loss of the stone, a chip in the diamond, misplacing the item, and so on,” says Conner.

SPP coverage is not limited to jewelry. Valuables such as cameras, musical instruments, fine art, sports equipment, stamp or coin collections, tools, and furs are just some of the items that people insure through the SPP coverage option.
