On Sunday, Feb. 12, the Moscow Sportsman’s Club on Union Mill Road will once again host the eighth annual Memorial Blood Drive in memory of Barry Allen Fillans Jr. and his father, Barry Allen Fillans Sr., from noon to 5 p.m.
Originally held in memory of her son who was killed in an automobile accident while driving to work on the morning of July 16, 2000, Marianne also decided to honor her husband who, in 2008, succumbed to a variety of health complications, including an ongoing battle with diabetes.
As a member of the North Pocono Blood Council, Marianne understands the importance of blood donations.
“This is such a critical time for us,” she said. “If you are an eligible donor, please show your support by attending this blood drive and by giving the gift of life.”
Over the years, this memorial blood drive has helped raise over 200 pints of blood for those in need. According to the American Red Cross, one pint of blood equals three lives saved, which means — using this formula — this drive has helped save more than 600 lives.
All presenting donors will be entered into a variety of raffles courtesy of local merchants.
Additionally, Marianne and members of the Faith Baptist Fellowship Church in Maplewood will prepare homemade chicken noodle soup and various baked goods for all presenting donors.
“But remember,” Marianne said, “it is so crucial for young people to donate because many of our present donors are older citizens and eventually they will reach a point where they simply can no longer donate.”
“Even if you don’t like needles,” she added, “as long as you are eligible, I strongly recommend trying it at least one time. Just think about it as doing good for others.”
Walk-ins are welcome. Double Reds donations are also needed, but you must call the American Red Cross at 207-0106 to schedule an appointment.
