State Rep. Sid Michaels Kavulich announced the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is accepting applications for the 2012 Environmental Education Grants Program.

Grants are available in amounts up to $7,500 and will be awarded in 2012. Those interested in applying may do so by contacting DEP at 717-772-1828 or via the web site at www.dep.state.pa.us and by clicking on “Environmental Education”, then “Grants”. The deadline to apply is Dec. 16.

“This program has improved environmental awareness among students and adults throughout the state,” Kavulich said.

The program provides grants to schools, colleges, county conservation districts, nonprofit organizations, municipalities and businesses to develop projects that support environmental education.

Topics include watershed management, water conservation, acid mine drainage, alternative energy, air quality, brownfields development and Chesapeake Bay restoration.

The Environmental Education Grants Program was established by the Environmental Education Act of 1993, which mandates that five percent of all pollution fines and penalties collected by DEP be set aside for environmental education. Since its inception, DEP has awarded nearly $8 million in grants to support environmental education efforts throughout Pennsylvania.
