North Pocono High School Student Council organized their annual canned food drive for the local North Pocono Food Pantry and the results were amazing!
In 2015, they raised about 3,000 cans. In 2016, they more than doubled it, collecting about 7,000 cans. This year, their 2017 collection more than doubled again to 18,729 cans!
North Pocono students were encouraged to collect cans through a competition between the grades, for “Spirit Week points” for the Spirit Week competition later this school year. Many teachers also gave incentives for points towards grades.
The Senior class won the competition, collecting the most non-perishable food items by a margin of about 1,000 cans! The cans were loaded onto (3) full school buses, to transport to the food pantry.
The executive student council officers that spearheaded and organized the drive are: President, Jenna Schmidt; Vice President, Lacey Rinaldi; Recording Secretary, Matt Caputo; Corresponding Secretary, Catey Wolff and Treasurer, Sarah Sposito, along with advisors Sandra Kilmer and Maria Semidei.
The collection results were announced at the Thanksgiving Pep Rally on Wednesday, (11/22), where a ticket raffle was also held to “Pie” the Principals, Resource Officer, and a Teacher in the face, along with a lip sync battle between the grades.
It is humbling to see how our school and community can come together to feed those less fortunate during the holidays. This is the spirit that makes us proud to be a part of North Pocono.
