SCRANTON — Children who are living with critical illnesses need the magic of a wish. Make-A-Wish needs residents in Lackawanna County to make it happen by volunteering their time and compassion to assist with fulfilling wishes.
Vince McClain, of Scott Township, Pa., was compelled to become a wish volunteer after his daughter was granted her wish in July of 2016.
“As I reflected on my feelings and the moving experience Make-A-Wish provided to our family, I knew I needed to become a part of this great organization,” McClain said. “I became a volunteer about a year ago and committed myself to bring the same emotional experience and healing process to other families.
“We as volunteers provide the chance to focus on the positive – a chance to look forward to the future and not continually focus on what the future holds, or more importantly, the uncertainty of the future,” said McClain. “Instead, we can help provide a time to laugh again, a time to dream, a time to prioritize life and be thankful for the positives in life.”
As members of “wish teams,” volunteers are the faces of Make-A-Wish in their local communities. Working together, the “wish team” is assigned to a child in their area, meets one-on-one with the family and aids in determining the most suitable wish for the child.
Make-A-Wish is currently looking for new volunteers in Lackawanna County. To become a wish volunteer, individuals must be at least 21 years of age, pass a criminal background check and attend a training session this fall.
