The Northeastern Pennsylvania Council, Boy Scouts of America in conjunction with King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, will hold its 13th annual Merit Badge College on Jan. 8, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Merit Badge College is a special advancement program available to all Northeastern Pennsylvania Scouts holding a rank of 1st class or above. This program provides Scouts with a unique opportunity to experience a variety of scientific, technical, and non-traditional merit badges.

Merit Badges are introductory learning modules that expose Scouts to a variety of trades, careers, activities, crafts, hobbies, and professions, through a series of experiential tasks.

Held on the King’s College campus, the day follows a collegiate-type schedule in an academic setting.  Serving again as Co-chairs of this year’s event are Andy Ewonishon of King’s College and Dr. Larry Morton of the Boy Scout’s Executive Board.

According to Dr. Morton, Council Advancement Chair, “By offering our Scouts the chance to earn multiple merit badges for rank advancement, Merit Badge College remains a very important part of the Scouting advancement program.”

Nearly 300 Scouts from Northeastern Pennsylvania, and beyond, are signed up to participate in this year’s Merit Badge College. Through a pre-registration process, Scouts may choose to enroll in one or more classes from a slate of nearly 30 different Merit Badge offerings, such as Lifesaving, Nuclear Science, Photography, Electronics, Chemistry, Architecture, Medicine, Citizenship, Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine.

Classes vary from two to eight hours in length and are facilitated by high-caliber, volunteer counselors who are selected based on being an accomplished professional or expert in a specific field.

Merit Badges are earned by Scouts only through completion of designated prerequisites, active participation and demonstrated knowledge of the specific material.

This event helps Scouts gain knowledge and make progress in their Scouting advancement, but also affords opportunities to meet other Scouts and adults from throughout the area, as well as getting a real taste of a collegiate atmosphere.

Those interested in more information on the Merit Badge College event can contact the Scout Service & Training Center at 207-1227 or Event Advisor, Dave Srebro at 357-6928.
